In the late 1800s Derby was home to the Briseis Tin Mine, then the richest and most extensive mining operation in the region. In its heydey it became the world's largest exporter of tin ore, but in 1929 the miners' hunger for nature's spoil clashed violently with the fury of nature itself. Having reshaped the very landscape that supported them in their quest to exploit it, severe weather caused the collapse of the Cascade Dam, resulting in a number of deaths and the near destruction of the township and many of its mining leases.
The Tin Centre at Derby tells this story about tin and why it was of such vital importance, not only to the region, but to the world.
